Although throughout the 20th century, Colombia was defined by its fidelity to the Catholic tradition, in recent decades the Catholic Church has suffered massive and constant desertion of the faithful who feed a new, more plural religious landscape. This religious transformation has had profound cultural and political repercussions that can be observed in all social sectors and in all regions of the country. However, it is difficult to measure this process of change and its implications to the extent that there is little quantitative information that accounts for the current national religious panorama.
