Above all, this book is a way back and an expression of gratitude to the Colombian victims and survivors in exile who have given their testimonies to Colombia’s Truth Commission.

When exile does not only entail devastation but also poverty and destitution, the situation is doubly painful. Martín Beristain’s texts, nevertheless, have an empathetic power, a good ear and a good heart, to speak of all these people, always from a perspective of solidarity, always attempting to preserve and emphasise the dignity of those who have been uprooted while avoiding pity for them, which is ultimately nothing but a form of disdain.
